Saturday Afternoon Ocean Swim Oceanside Pier

I had a great swim Saturday around the pier. The water was as clean as I have seen it in recent memory. It still retains that geen/aqua tint with the light blue that is so appealing to the beachgoer. The visibility was about eight feet, which sounds unimpressive per se, but around here is unusual and welcome to the swim-goggle wearer. It's nice to be able to see the bottom for a bit as one swims out.

As I parked above the strand, I was putting coins into the meter and a young couple just in front of my car was doing the same. They asked me if I had any extra change for a dollar, which I did; I always bring at least three dollars in quarters and extra coins in a little bottle in my car. I gave them four quarters for the buck, and then the gentleman told me that they were visiting from Canada on business and gave me a Canadian coin. This was very exciting for me, as I am usually the one giving money to people asking for it. The coin, he said, was a Canadian two dollar piece, called a Toonie, and it was considered to be good luck. It is a beautiful coin, about the size of our dollar coin, but is has two colors. It has a gold center and a silver outer perimeter. Look it up on Google; it is a neat coin. I will save it and use it for any good luck it may bring.

I took a quick walk to take pictures and observe the water. Then I wore my rash guard t-shirt and shorts with swim trunks. I recently downgraded from extra large trunks to large, although the large are a bit snug. So, some progress there. I wore two swim caps. Now I'm wearing two because I ripped my old one a week or two ago as I was putting it on in the water. In chilly water, about 58 degrees yesterday, the cap helps. So now I'll have a spare on my head if I rip another one.

The water was flat and great for a comforting swim. Inside, there were beautiful waves, well-shaped with long intervals between waves. Outside past the breakers was a gentle, mild swell or roll to the ocean that didn't detract from the flat surface for swimming. Really gorgeous out there. I felt good and did a round-trip, i.e., I swam around the pier and then swam back to where I had started. I got tired swimming back out on my round-trip, as the tide was coming in noticeably. Then my energy was low for the rest of the swim but I finished ok. When I was out off the end of the pier (I swim about eighty yards or so past the end) I had to keep an eye out for the jet skiers and the speedboats zipping by. As one swims far out there and boats or jet skies are near-not necessarily even that near, about 200 yards, one hears a whine or jet engine-like sound, almost a whistling sound. That's when I start picking my head up and looking around for safety. Since it's an oddity to see a lone swimmer, there is a tendency for the boats and especially the jet skiers to come closer to see what is that in the water. Often it is a lifeguard just checking for safety, which is nice.

My left calf cramped as I came in through the breakers upon finishing my swim but I caught a good wave and body-surfed it for a longer-than-usual ride. A really great beach swim day!

Oh, I forgot to mention the surfers. They were only about 18 surfers on both sides of the pier and conditions were great! They had plenty of room for all to find nice rides. I wondered where the heck all the surfers were on such a beautiful day.

Churchill Slasher Fins

Friday afternoon after work I went and swam around the pier. Good swim! First, before driving to the pier, I stopped and broke down and purchased a new pair of Churchill Slasher Fins. I just bought the same fins and size as last time. I used them in my swim today and they are GREAT! The fin is firm and delivers a powerful, propulsive kick if needed.
The water was colder today than yesterday-I'm guessing 59 degrees or a bit colder. Water color aqua blue green, fresh and invigorating. High tide but not crazy rough. My swim out was easier than my swim in. On my way in I swallowed a bit of seawater and stopped to puke for half a minute. The swim in felt like I was swimming against the direction of the water-very unusual. Several surfers were on each side of the pier-the surf was about 4 feet with mediocre shape. Overall, a nice, crisp swim. Love my new Churchill Slasher Fins!

Oceanside Pier Swim June 9, 2011

So, no pictures today because I had not planned to swim today after work. However, I drove by the beach and there were plenty of parking spots so I just went for it. My neck isn't better yet but I thought that the water might help. It didn't help the neck but I got my adrenaline rush in. No wet suit today, no rash guard shirt or shorts. Just plain trunks, fins, and goggles. The water was high tide, cold, and rough and surgy. The rip currents were just close to the pier on both sides, not all over the place like it was the last couple of weeks.
Swimming out into the chop was vigorous; the chop was about two feet. Swimming in was with the chop so it was a bit better. I didn't have my swim cap and it sure makes a difference in the cold water-the inside of your ears get cold without it. I was getting pretty cold by the end-it took about forty minutes to get around and I was tring to put some good effort into the swim.
So, a good swim, and I'll probably go on Friday again.

Sunday Pier 94.9 Band Show Oceanside

I went to the pier earlier than usual today, Sunday, about 4 PM. The few blocks around the pier on both sides and on Mission Ave. were blocked and fenced off by security. A bandfest was going on at the amphitheater with many food booths behind the fences. I looked it up and a ticket was $35 for bands that I never heard of-but lots of people must like them! The water was beautiful. It said 58 degrees but felt warmer than that to me. I tore my swim cap as I put it on so my head was chilly. No wet suit. Visibility only about 5 feet. Waves not great for surfing-only a dozen or so surfers onn the south side. It was rougher than it looked like getting out through the breakers. I needed to catch my second wind after getting through. Then I had a slow swim in a big arc around the pier and the outer limits of the surfers. I didn't feel the energy today- lots of pain and stiffness still in my neck.

Elite Taekwondo Championships Oceanside Pier

Saturday at the pier there was an outdoor Taekwondo Championship and the day was beautiful. Clear skies and 69 degrees. Even better was the water. Temperature 60 degrees with very flat swimming conditions. No wet suit needed. The waves inside were small but there were a dozen or so surfers on the south side of the pier when I went at about 5:30 PM. I had a nice, slow, relaxing swim around the pier in a big arc. After about two hundred yards I swallowed a gulp of sea water while breathing to the side which gave me the dry heaves for about three minutes. After that my stomach quieted down. Aside from that, my swim was uneventful. My pinched neck was hurting and is hurting more now at home afterward. Hopefully it will loosen up some with some time. I'm glad that I went; I would have missed a beautiful swim day had I not.
